When people hear the term “financial therapy” they tend to think of a mental health professional, but that’s not it at all!  Financial Therapy is the understanding that money means more than just numbers to your clients.  Financial Therapy can aid financial planners in asking the right questions, fostering trust, and helping their clients reach their life goals—not just the financial goals.

Dr. Megan McCoy will provide an overview of this new field of research and practice, and explain how it can benefit you and your clients. She will also describe a specific approach to financial therapy that she created called Narrative Financial Therapy.  Her presentation will conclude with an exploration of a specific Narrative Financial Therapy Intervention, “the Miracle Question,” and explain how to it can be applied in your client interactions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe what financial therapy is and what it looks like in a financial planning practice.
  • Learn the benefits of adding this perspective to a financial planning practice.
  • Describe Narrative Financial Therapy through clear steps that financial planners can integrate into their practices.
  • Demonstrate the miracle question and understand its application to financial planning work.
