The Emotional Side of Estate Planning: What Professionals Can’t Afford to Ignore

1.0 CE per the CFP Board (*please see below)

About the Webinar

Estate planning challenges rarely stem from a lack of legal or technical knowledge alone. In practice, emotional discomfort, uncertainty about priorities, and difficulty translating personal values into decisions often lead clients to procrastinate or disengage from the process.

In this presentation, Amy N. Mullen, CFP®, President of Money Quotient, examines the most common obstacles that arise in estate planning, including those experienced by advisors, clients, and inheritors, with attention to both practical and emotional factors that interfere with completion.

This session will also address how estate planning that focuses primarily on legal and technical execution—without sufficient attention to the human side of decision-making—can unintentionally result in confusion, strained family relationships, sadness, and disappointment after death. Frequently, the burdens placed on heirs are not fully considered during the planning process, leaving beneficiaries to navigate unclear intentions, unresolved emotions, and complex decisions during an already difficult time.

Participants will explore the importance of a practical, values-based process that integrates legacy planning into estate planning conversations. Amy will discuss how qualitative discovery, supported by structured tools and resources, can illuminate both the technical understanding required for sound planning and the emotional obstacles that may be holding clients back. This approach supports clearer decision-making, improved communication of intentions, and more thoughtful outcomes for clients and their families.
