Facilitating Biography Conversations in Financial Planning: A Live Demonstration

1.0 CE per the CFP Board (*please see below)

About the Webinar

Financial decisions are rarely shaped by numbers alone. A client’s values, fears, preferences, motivations, and goals are often rooted in formative life experiences that influence how they see money, risk, security, opportunity, and success. Without understanding a client’s biography, advisors may miss critical context that affects present-day decision-making.

In this interactive session, Amy N. Mullen, CFP®, President of Money Quotient, will demonstrate how financial professionals can facilitate meaningful conversations about a client’s life experiences using structured MQ tools. Participants will observe how exploring biography helps uncover how values were formed, how financial perspectives developed, and how past experiences may contribute to current anxieties, passions, and aspirations. These conversations provide clarity for both the client and the advisor, strengthening mutual understanding and informing more aligned planning recommendations.

Through live demonstration and guided explanation, this session will illustrate how biography-based discovery can be both engaging and professionally valuable. Participants will learn how qualitative exploration enhances trust, deepens insight, and creates a more informed foundation for goal setting and financial decision-making.
