When we start getting down to those essences, then all of a sudden we can say, “I can show you some other possibilities that you might like even more, that you probably hadn’t even considered as possibilities. Of course you didn’t articulate them as goals. Why would you say it’s a goal when you didn’t even think it was possible? I have to show you the possibilities first, but I don’t even know what possibilities to show you until I get to the actual things you’re really trying to solve for.” … I pretty much don’t believe anyone when they tell me their goals because the goal is never the goal. The goal, at best, is a proxy for something else, and at worst is [someone else’s goal].
